/// GLXNS /// ANNOUNCED AS SUPPORT FOR TOM TOM CLUB @ BRUDENELL SOCIAL CLUB 27.06.13!!

music-never-CLICKThe last couple of days have been pretty much a rollercoaster of pre-tour panic, serious practicing (aided by Twiglets, coffee, and chocolate biscuits), sheer elation, and too much time spent peering into laptops….

But without doubt the best thing that has happened this week, aside from getting our masters back from Atlanta, has been the announcement on Twitter on Thursday that we have been officially confirmed as the special guest support for Tom Tom Club at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, on June 27th. The show will be a Glastonbury warm-up for Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz’ seminal cult outfit of the 80s, and we are looking forward to this one immensely.

See below for details…

Hope to see you there!

A Very Special Glastonbury Warm-Up show with…

TOM TOM CLUB

plus special guest support

Known For Timeless Hits Such As Genius Of Love And Wordy Rappinghood, Tom Tom Club Was Formed By Chris Frantz And Tina Weymouth, Founding Members Of Talking Heads.

Tom Tom Club was originally formed by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth. Graduates from the Rhode Island School of Design, they moved to New York City where they founded Talking Heads as a trio with David Byrne. Chris played drums, Tina played bass and David sang and played guitar. Talking Heads took a hiatus after five years of touring internationally and four studio albums, and Chris and Tina began the Tom Tom Club.

When legendary reggae producer Lee “Scratch” Perry failed to show up for the scheduled recording sessions in the Bahamas, label chief Chris Blackwell allowed Chris and Tina to produce the album themselves with Jamaican engineer Steven Stanley. Tom Tom Club’s first single was “Wordy Rappinghood,” an unusually original mix of schoolyard rap over a funky groove that went into the top of the charts in 17 countries. “Wordy Rappinghood” turned out to be seminal in bringing mainstream attention to the new spirit of hip-hop.

The group’s second single was the remarkable “Genius of Love.” Released in the UK before North America, the track was bubbling up in the underground with dozens of unsolicited remixes and versions–most notably, Grandmaster Flash’s “It’s Nasty/Genius of Love” in 1982—a massive hit in the clubs and on the R&B and dance charts, soon earning the Tom Tom Club debut a Gold sales award. In 1995, Mariah Carey hit #1 with “Fantasy,” her version of “Genius of Love” featuring Ol’ Dirty Bastard rapping over the original instrumental track. “Genius of Love” continues to be frequently sampled by various artists, from Tupac Shakur to most recently, T.I. feat. Fergie and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. Tom Tom Club continues to celebrate more than thirty years as a band. Last year, they performed their timeless classic “Genius of Love” on NBC’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” It was a flashback to one of the group’s earliest career highlights – playing the hit song on the highly popular TV show “Soul Train” back in 1983 – at a time when it was in heavy rotation on urban radio stations.

In 2002, Frantz and Weymouth were inducted at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The title track from the new album “Downtown Rockers” pays tribute to the many bands that created the downtown music scene in New York City in the 70’s from The Velvet Underground to the Talking Heads. The song was mixed by Ed Stasium, who also recorded and mixed Talking Heads ’77 and umpteen Ramones classics.

NEW SONGS AND VIDEO ONLINE TODAY!

083You can now listen to two of our new songs online, and watch a video for ‘My Shit Is Custom’. Check our Soundcloud for two new recordings, fresh from the mastering engineer this week. They are ‘Strictly Busin£$$’ and ‘My Shit Is Custom’. The latter track is one we wrote in the studio and we will debut it live at our tour launch at Wharf Chambers in Leeds on May 23rd. It will also appear on vinyl this year, more details on that later.

For this latest recording we hired the services of our pal Darren Moore, a great drummer, guitar player and percussion player from Teesside. Darren played congas, agogo bells, and cowbells on the majority of our eight new studio jams, and his playing really is full of feel, soul, and totally in the pocket. We’re sure you will agree.

One again, Ross Halden did a great job recording and mixing, not to mention coming up with some great post-production ideas, which really helped get the songs sounding blazing.

Thanks also to Rendered Eyes for the awesome, mind-bending visuals in the video.

RELEASE YOURSELF III at Wharf Chambers, Leeds, May 4th 2013…..

Logo2Pat, Henry, and Matt host their third party at their favourite co-operative-run venue in Leeds City Centre, Wharf Chambers. We hope you’ll agree that four months feels like too long since our last party, so we’re really excited to be able to invite you to do it all again on Saturday the 4th of May.

We’d love it if you could all join us on the dance floor for a third night of high energy, free expression and uptempo records that we hope will make for another memorable party.

This time we extend warm greetings to fabulous Manchester-based collective Disco Mums (http://discomums.co.uk/) who will be joining the party and playing some records, as well as RY DJs Matt, Pat, and Henry, plus some familiar faces from the parties last year.

As usual we want to welcome all-comers to unite through a love of music, dancing and each other, to celebrate and respect one another and to just enjoy being excellent together. So come along, bring your friends, smile, laugh, dance, and Release Yourself”.

VBC Pool PartySO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!

Delighted to announce that we have been invited to perform at the following party on June the 8th. Follow the link at the bottom of this post to join the event.

Amazing Outdoor Swimming Pool /// Gourmet BBQ /// Coach Transport /// Cocktails /// Live Band & DJs

Start your day at night
Eat / Drink / Party Hard

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
About our POOL PARTY
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
When we created the Vagabonds Breakfast Club we set out to bring you new and exciting ways and places to socialize – providing you, our adventurous band of vagabonds, a unique night of partying to look forward to on sparingly spread dates throughout the year. We promise a unique night of great value eating, drinking & partying hard – and after a great first VBC, our Christmas New York Loft Party at Munro House back in December, we think we’ve delivered even BIGGER with this, our next party!

Our desire to be different has lead us to try our best to take you to locations where other Leeds party providers don’t tread… and so here we are… with our second installment of the Vagabonds Breakfast Club – we’re leading the way with a first for Leeds – it’s time to ‘get in there like swimwear’ – for the Vagabonds Breakfast Club Pool Party.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
About our amazing outdoor swimming pool – Ilkley Lido
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The setting – Ilkely Lido is a truly beautiful spot. It is the only outdoor pool in the area and is one of Britain’s last few remaining public outdoor swimming pools. Just minutes from Ilkley town centre, the lido’s beautiful far ranging views across Ilkley Moor and the famous Cow and Calf makes it even more special. It features gorgeous art deco architecture, including the Café building which will become our dancefloor for the night. So… It’s not surprising it ranked highly in the Telegraph’s top 10 lidos in the country.

Included as part of the ticket price, you’ll be whisked away to the Lido by coach from a Leeds city centre pick up – and of course dropped back in Leeds when the pool party closes.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
To swim… or not to swim
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The party will be amazing whether you decide you want to take a plunge in the pool or not! But for those that wish to ‘get in there like swimwear’ – you will be allowed to swim for the first hour and a half of the party before you start eating and drinking.

▬▬▬▬▬▬
Food & drink
▬▬▬▬▬▬
While our swimmers take to the pool we’ll spark up the coals on the BBQ in preparation for a Gourmet Feast of barbequed meats & salads – just the ticket after an icy plunge in the Lido’s beautiful outdoor pool. Vegitarian options will also be available.

A variety of drinks will be available to suit all budgets… and of course there’ll be Vagabonds Breakfast Club suitably themed one-off cocktails to suit our aquatic adventure!

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Our musical backdrop
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
It wouldn’t be a Vagabonds Breakfast Club without some great music.

During our early swimming session – poolside music will be provided by a live set from GALAXIANS. Fresh off the back of their UK tour, this will mark a fitting end to the tour for them – and an awesome start to the summer for us!

Taking their cues from 80s NY / Chicago labels such as SAM, Are ‘n’ Bee, TRAX, and Sleeping Bag – expect analog synth driven electro to set the pace while you take to the pool.

As the night progresses there’ll be disco driven DJ sets from Lucy Locket plus more DJs to be announced.

▬▬▬▬▬
Coach travel
▬▬▬▬▬
Return coach travel will be provided to the Lido from Leeds City Centre – coach pick up will be from the layby next to Leeds train station at 5pm and the coach will depart the Lido at 1am – more info will be provided to those who purchase tickets.

▬▬▬▬
After party
▬▬▬▬
For those that want to carry on the party on our return to Leeds we will have a few options for you to choose from… watch this space for more information as June 8th draws closer.

GLXNS @ British Wildlife festival – Brudenell Social Club 02.03.13

GALAXIANS @ British Wildlife festival 02.03.13 by No Wave and Francesca Micucci.

British Wildlife festival, hosted by Adam Nodwell and the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, was a ball this year and we were lucky enough to headline day 2, an honour, especially considering the quality of acts playing that day – Bilge Pump, Black Moth, MKBL etc.

Here’s a visual document of our set. These shots were taken by Trent Rampage (No Wave) and Francesca Micucci, and we hope you like them.

Our pal Kate Broughton also took some great shots, you can view the lot here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pro_jection/sets/72157632932054941/

// GHOST TOWN RECORDING SESSIONS – Feb 2013 //

10

We’re mightily pleased and excited to announce that we will be returning to the studio this weekend to start work on our next batch of recordings, which will include brand new songs and unrecorded songs from our current live set.

Once again we will be working with Ross Halden at Ghost Town studios in Leeds. Ross engineered our first six tracks in 2012, which you can find on both our Bandcamp and on our website.

The sessions will take us through two weekends in February, plus further weekends recording and mixing in March and April. We’re hoping to have the sessions mastered and available for release in time for our UK and European tour in May and June this year.

Here’s a list of songs for the sessions:

Ducket$z
Visual
Nightlife
Out They Minds
Skydive
My Shit is Custom
Strictly Busin£$$
Blasting Off

Some of these tracks will definitely get a vinyl release in 2013, so watch this space! We’ll also make them available on our Bandcamp as high quality downloads.

If you fancy popping in over the weekend make sure you bring either halloumi or falafel (or both) sandwiches, espresso coffee (Lavazza or Illy please), or Morrison’s doughnuts, or we won’t let you in. Just kidding.

Peace.

RELEASE YOURSELF II @ Wharf Chambers 15/12/12

What an incredible night!! Difficult to actually express in words how much fun we had at Release Yourself II at our favourite Leeds venue Wharf Chambers on Saturday. Amazing live sets from Runners and Unmade Bed, great DJ sets from Matt, Pat, Henry, Dom, Brigit, and Gav, beautiful dancers, a great vibe, our best decor design yet, and a packed house.

The night kicked off with a beautiful set from Sheffield band Unmade Bed, on only their third gig and debut Leeds performance. Hannah, Robert and Dorian describe themselves as “No Wave bedroom disco”. We’d say that’s a good description. James Chance-style abrasive, scratchy guitar playing, raw, glitchy drum machine dance beats, great bass hooks with that warm semi-acoustic tone, and incredible, soulful singing. Not only do they have great songs, a sharp style and look incredibly sexy on stage, they are also friendly, forthcoming and a delight to spend time with. Personally we hope they come back very soon.

Find them here: http://unmadebedthepopgroup.tumblr.com/

We were very sad to hear about the recent demise of one of our favourite Leeds bands and Stargaze Records label pals Runners, so it’s fair to say that we watched their set with heavy hearts. Having said that, it’s impossible to watch Runners without feeling incredibly uplifted by their particular brand of live dance music. For us it’s just a great mix of elements, neatly packaged into a very tasteful and considered whole. It’s part-krautrock – the foreword momentum and motorik style, part-ambient techno – warm, rounded, repetitive bass synth hooks, part-house – euphoric, polyrhythmic synth melodies. What’s not to like?? So, farewell Runners, we shall miss you. On the plus side we have new ex-Runners projects to look forward to, namely Girls Water (Jonathan Nash / Toby Gamlen) and Chrononautz (Leon Carey / Dominic Clare) and we have been informed that Runners plan to record their remaining unreleased tracks before they finally call it a day. This pleases us greatly.

Find them here: http://longdistancerunners.wordpress.com/

The DJ sets all really went off at this RY party, and it was really satisfying to see so many people whooping, hollering, high-fiving, and generally losing their shit on the dancefloor. Beautiful smiling faces and a very well-dressed and friendly crowd, just what we like to see. The sets from Matt, Pat, Henry, Brigit, Dom, and Gav pumped out house, boogie, disco, post-disco, techno, hi-nrg, italo, two-step, garage, electro, krautrock, and no wave. It was LOUD, and we utilized those in-house subs as best we could!

Here’s a selection from Matt’s two sets:

Big Fun – INNER CITY (1988)

Optimo – LIQUID LIQUID (1983)

I Believe (feat. Lindsey Caldwell) – ELI ESCOBAR (2012)

You’re My Number One – RADIANCE feat. ANDREA STONE (1983)

Let’s Do It – CONVERTION (1980)

Inspector Norse – TODD TERJE (2012)

You Can’t Have It – STARGAZE (1982)

From Here To Eternity – GIORGIO MORODER (1977)

Bax – MOSCA (2011)

You Are In My System – THE SYSTEM (1982)

Track 2 – EROS EP (2012)

Walking On Sunshine – ROCKER’S REVENGE feat. DONNIE CALVIN (1982)

Get Off (You Fascinate Me) – PATRICE RUSHEN (1984)

I’m Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair) – INNER LIFE (1979)

Weekend – CLASS ACTION (1983)

Bad Times (I Can’t Stand It) – CAPTAIN RAPP (1983)

Hopscotch (Larry Levan remix) – GWEN GUTHRIE (1983)

Trent was on hand again and took some great shots, here’s a selection of those:

So, on behalf of Release Yourself we would like to say a huge thanks to all the staff at Wharf Chambers who worked both the day and night shifts (Lotte, Andrew, Tommo, Eleanor, Rob, Alex, Anna), everyone who worked on the door for us (Gem, Rachel, Jed, Martha, Jess, George), the bands (Nash, Toby, Leon, Dom, Hannah, Dorian, Robert), our guest DJs (Dom, Gav, Brigit) and everyone who came, danced, hung out, shook hands, held hands, kissed, hugged, drank, and hooked up. We hope you had a chance to release yourself and we hope to see you at the next one!

Matt xxx

RUNNERS DJs

Feels like it’s been a while, but we cant wait to have you come dance with us again. We were all so pleased with our last party – over the past few months we’ve all been day dreaming about how much fun we had. You dancers really made it for us.

We just hope we can make it for you again.

This time we hope to make Release Yourself even more special.

We’re delighted to have former Long Blondes guitarist Dorian Cox’ new No Wave bedroom disco outfit Unmade Bed, who will make the trip over from Sheffield to play for us. Have a listen here:

http://soundcloud.com/unmade-bed

Our good friends and upfront good hearted Leeds party people Runners will be playing too. In case you don’t know they’re a blend of Krautrock, proto-house and ambient techno, and feature members of Hookworms, Chrononautz, Nope, Charlie Cake etc etc:

We’re delighted to announce that we asked some friends to come play some records and they said yes. So expect some new faces behind the decks. If you would like to play at the next party just get in touch.

Most of all though expect to dance freely. What we value most of all in putting on nights like this is our belief that anyone of us can come together from any background, even just for the night, to celebrate each other and dance together. We want you to make friends – maybe even fall in love. We’re hoping that you come and make a connection with someone and Release Yourself.

Get your backs off the wall people – let’s go dancing.
